GETTING TO KNOW DL MORENO
by Jacqueline Jax host of A.V.A Live Radio
I was looking for music online and found the instrumental track for Savage with Trey Songz on the hook. Iʼm a big fan of Trey and was psyched to find out Vinay Vyas, aka Vinay The Producer/TODAY with Warner Music Group whom Iʼve had the good fortune of licensing music from, produced it. When I heard the track, particularly Trey on vocals, I was blown away. I knew I had to write/record something on it. I secured a non-exclusive agreement with Vinay and released my version of it soon thereafter.
As far as the lyrics for Savage, I touch on some pretty risqué subjects (ex. sex and threesomes), cheating, insecurity and/ or taking partners for granted in relationships. Itʼs a little auto-biographical but includes what Iʼve read from friendsʼ postings on social media. I wasn’t really writing it for this reason, but maybe thereʼs a lesson in it. Take care of your significant other or he/she might go elsewhere. Finally, Iʼm grateful that Savage has been well received. Itʼs actually playing on Pandora and was in rotation on other online radio stations, it’s success has taken my music career to the next level.
I have 2 new singles in the works, Rollinʼ produced by Ace AP Productions, and Last Night, another banger from Vinay Vyas. Theyʼre currently being mixed/mastered and Iʼll release them soon. Both songs were inspired by lyrics from a song by J.Cole, G.O.M.D., “Itʼs called love…donʼt nobody sing about it no more…” I decided to do just that! Also, youʼll hear me sing more on both tracks as Iʼm trying to grow as an artist. Rollinʼ is more of an R&B joint with a west coast vibe, I sing and harmonize throughout it. And Last Night, imagine Big Sean on the verses with Justin Timberlake singing the hook, lol. Weʼll see if I can pull it off, but I do respect what both of those artists do artistically. I strive to create music that Iʼm proud of but will also be competitive with artists of that caliber in the music industry.
Where do I live and whatʼs the music scene like…
I live in Bakersfield, CA. Most people know Bakersfield for itʼs country music scene (ex. Buck Owens, Merle Haggard), or the new metal sound created by our hometown boys, KoRn. But what people may not know is we have a couple of DJʼs from Bakersfield who made a name for themselves in the worldwide hiphop music scene. Nick and Eric Vidal aka The BAKABOYZ came up at Power 106 FM in Los Angeles. They now have a weekly syndicated show, The Baka Boyz Master Mix, which is broadcast throughout the U.S. As far as the local music scene from my observations on social media, thereʼs a lot of underground music out there, much more so than in years past due to the fact that artists are now able produce, mix/master their music from home and release it themselves on iTunes, Amazon, etc via Tunecore or Distrokid. Personally, and this is not to take away from what the local artists are doing, I donʼt listen to their music for the simple fact that I want to keep what I do as original as possible.
The music business…
pros and cons experienced, etc. Music has definitely changed over the past few decades. Some say for the better, others say itʼs gotten worse. In my humble opinion, music cannot remain constant, it has to evolve into something different, hopefully better, in order to be new and exciting. The technology has definitely improved the quality of music. Lyrically, most music of this generation is reflective of whatʼs going on in social media…”itʼs all about ME and SELFIES.” Particularly in contemporary hiphop, artists brag on what they own or how much money they have, and “beef” way too much! Bob Marley and Marvin Gaye, 2 of the greatest artists ever, inspire me. They entertained but were able to deliver a positive message in their music, something thatʼs definitely lacking in todayʼs music. Thatʼs what Iʼm striving to do as an artist…not quite there yet but working on it…
Who would I love to have 5 minutes alone with…
Iʼd definitely want to talk to God. Why? Well, when I was 6 years old, I almost died. I was diagnosed with 3 potentially fatal diseases. I survived it all, but always wondered why God spared my life. I would ask Him what His plan is for me, and what He would like for me to accomplish here on earth. Iʼm no saint, definitely done my share of dirt, but would very much love to help my family whoʼve always had my back. AND, Iʼd love to help sick children as well, you know the oneʼs you see on the St. Jude Hospital or Shrinerʼs Hospital commercials. If I ever achieve a level of success where Iʼm in a position to help, I will!
