GETTING TO KNOW JEAN CABBIE
by Jacqueline Jax host of A.V.A Live Radio
I got my start in music…
on my early teens. It came at a time when there was my coming of age and it seemed to be the right thing to do at the time. I got hit by the music bug when I started listening to groups such as The Beatles, Queen, The Who and many others in the classic rock genre. I started playing guitar around 14 and moved to bass guitar when I started playing with groups. In the early days we used to do original songs but later changed to do cover music as it was the only way to play at clubs and private events. I did that for seven years until I realized that I was defeating my own purpose as my main goal was to write and record my own material.
was originally written some years ago in a different key. The song was given a new introduction and set in a vocal key which was easier for me to sing. This is something that every songwriter should keep in mind when writing their own material. “Breathe” had a good vibe and many people liked it from the very beginning. After performing “After Hours”, our latest cd release for a couple of years, it was decided that it was time to record new tracks and udpate our repertoire. “Breathe” was the first one to be recorded. Very creative good vibe and cost effectiveness at the studio. The song was recorded between November 2014 and January 2015 and it has already been included and performed at the band’s live set list along with many radio stations and radio shows.
San Juan Puerto Rico…
Jean Cabbie & The Secret Admirer Society is an alternative rock group based in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Most of our individual and collective careers have developed in the Island performing along with other musicians and groups throughout the years along as a unit at our live shows. The Puerto Rico rock music scene has its up and downs. Right now there not that many venues to perform. I personally would recommend Handlebar, which includes many tribute and cover bands, Legends Sports Restaurant, Paki Sports Lounge, Downtown and Shannan’s Pub.
I don’t have a particular hobby or free time as music does take a lot of my time. Besides music, I like to do a lot of reading, watch movies, and do a lot of walking as it helps me to clear my mind which is great therapy in helping me to come up with new tunes. I also do a little bit of nightlife when it is possible to do so.
There are many ways you could promote your band through social media….
Here’s the thing: since there are many artists and bands out there it is very important to be consistent with your music promotion so there’s a lot of follow up to be done in order to get your artist/band name out there. Consistency and persistence are the keys in order to get noticed at social media platforms.
I would love to have 5 minutes alone with…
The Beatles. The reason is very simple. They were a very successful group, very upfront and honest in their views, great song catalog and even greater work ethic. That alone provides a model for me to follow in order to attain success.
I realized many years ago that music is a very trendy business…
I always try to do things “outside the box” regardless of the current trends. It makes it more of a challenge to be an independent group and to be commercial at the same time. The danger in sounding trendy is that everything ends up sounding the same and you face the danger of falling under the “flavor of the month” syndrome. As a group, we don’t work that way. We record and perform what we feel like playing.
The challenge …
I want to create a great song catalog for the band. That’s the key for me and is the reason why I dedicate a lot of time of honing my songwriting skills. Regarding the band: we keep rehearsing in order to be tight and have a great band show. As for the promotions, I’m always on the lookout for the best opportunities and exposure. Everything is step by step and persistence. First you take care of the goals which are easier to do and then you build up from there until you get whenever you want to take your career.
The thing I’m most afraid of is…
not to be able to attain my goals due to some unfortunate twist of destiny. Everything for me is career driven so it is very important to take care of every little detail and expect the best.
My personal definition of success is…
to attain my music related aspirations and aim high in its further development. To have the personal satisfaction to be able to promote my music to different markets throughout the world is my main objective at this time and to continue working in order to be successful in this area is my main concern and objective.
