Joel Jorgensen indie artist

“Sunshine Kisses” is about some one who means quite a lot to me. We have been friends for a long time and truth be told I have always wanted to be hers. So the song is based on both face and fantasy from my perspective. Funny thing is that Sunshine Kisses is her favorite song I have ever written and I haven’t told her it’s about her. Maybe one day I will. 😉 – Joel Jorgensen : LA @jorgensenjoel

A Musical Family..
I was literally listening to music before I was born. The Guild guitar that I play today belonged to my father. When I was still in the womb, my father would play his guitar on my mother’s belly. One of my first and best childhood memories is laying next to my Dad, listening to him pluck at his guitar strings, and singing his songs while he was blowing smoke rings in the air. Not too long after, as a little boy, my dad caught me playing the same guitar I play today. I distinctly remember that my hands were so small, that my fingers could not even reach around the neck of the guitar to strum and play one of my made up cords! HAHA Now, that same Guild guitar and I have years and years of memories and many, many songs behind us.

“Sunshine Kisses”
I write produce and engineer all of my music and on Sunshine kisses I played all the instruments except for the drums. My co producer Damian Fink played them.  I love and am so grateful that I get to write and play music for a living and I think that shines threw my music. 😉

LA Music scene…
The music scene in Los Angeles is a bear to say the least, but if you dig deeply enough, you’ll find people who are not only about the music business but still love music for the pure, creative and universal language it is. LA is the city of industry, so one night you will see a very young pop artist sell out the Hollywood Bowl singing to backing tracks, and the next night, catch the Foo Fighters blow the roof off of a local bar/venue with a 250 person maximum capacity room. I’d say if you are going out in Los Angeles to see a show, check the LA Weekly. It is the best place to see what is playing on any given night. If you are a fly by the seat of your pants kind of concertgoer, then here are a few places to experience a great show just about any night of the week! Hotel Cafe, Room 5, Piano Bar, Space Land, and Echo.

Musical Influences..
I am a lover of all music genres, but too narrow it down; I would say that Beck has influenced me the most over the years. Tom Waits, Tori Amos, PJ Harvey, Jack White all take a close second. Beck’s album “Sea Change” has affected the way I sing, play, and how I consume music. It is not every day anymore that you can listen to an album from beginning to end. The music industry is a singles game again just like it was way back in the early to mid 1900’s. A few years back, I was at a sold out White Stripes show at the Hollywood Bowl, when a guy came strutting his stuff onto the stage mid set and picked up a bass guitar. I was like who is this guy? Then he started singing, and I knew right away; it was Beck. His performance was probably one of the best shows I ever seen to date.

Success…
To me, success is defined as communication through music and by having a fan tell me how one of my songs connected to him or her on a deeper than skin level because I had no idea that my music could reach a person in such a way. After experiencing this, that was the day I knew I was doing something right.

If heaven exists what’s the first thing you would like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates…
I’d hope to hear, took you long enough! Good job!!!
