GETTING TO KNOW SPACE CUSHION
by Jacqueline Jax host of A.V.A Live Radio
Lead vocal/Bass: Scotty MC
Guitar/backing vocal: Bill Corely
Drums: Bret “Pinger” Bryon
Person Interviewing: Scott Carlin
Song name: Walk Away
Music Genre/ category : Hard rock
The song was inspired my frustration and feelings of betrayal when an old bandmate and friend of mine suddenly quit our group and basically walked away from everything we worked so hard for.
The lyrics started out as being just about him but then morphed into an amalgamation of other people throughout my life who for one reason or another just basically walked out on me.
I wanted convey my frustrations musically as well and I found inspiration for the sound from Helmet. I really love their use of aggressive riffs combined with strong melody and heavy groove.

You can expect a victory! Seriously though, you never know what to expect because sometimes I don’t! I am constantly inspired and influenced by everything around me and that translates into my writing. I definitely have my own style of writing and when Bill and Bret come in to the songs and their flavor, it’s always a tasty mix!
We are, at our core, a hard rock band and that’s usually what forms the basis for everything we do. You’ll hear punk, pop, and metal in there but it’s basically old school rock n roll.
I think we summed it up best as part of our bio: “While most rock songs are like a well-crafted beer or wine, Space Cushion’s are like shots of whiskey: simple yet hard-edged; they go down fast and hit ya in the gut. Hours later, you’re still reeling from the effects.”
It’s not nearly what it once was but it’s still thriving. There is a group of us that lean more toward a harder-edged sound that work as a loose collective and we support each other immensely. We support each other’s efforts, book shows together, share ideas, etc.
If you find the right people in this business who care more about music than money, hold on to them tight! There are a lot of scammers and opportunists in this business but there are a lot of good people who just want to make music and help others do the same. I have met so many good people and forged amazing friendships through music. No regrets!
I would love to have 5 minutes alone with…. why?
John Lennon. Not only was he a genius songwriter but he was an astute observer of humanity and social dynamics. I would love to see what he thinks of today’s world.
