Jacqueline Jax: The Music bug bit when…

Pam Taylor – I’ve been involved with music since I was a child. Growing up in a Pentecostal Holiness Church, everything revolved around music. In 2nd grade I started taking piano lessons and I took them for 7 years but I don’t play at all today. It was the guitar that drew me in. I didn’t take music seriously as a career choice at all until the last few years. I had no idea this would happen. It was mainly just a way for me to channel my emotions.

C’mon Baby…

was written by Robert and I about a dream I had not long after we met. He was raised by all women, his Grandma being the main presence, but she passed before I even got to meet her. He says he was her favorite and I’m inclined to believe him..lol The dream was so real.. after one of his solo gigs I couldn’t find my shoes and I ran outside after him to see if he had seen them and when I asked, he turned and I saw a beautiful womans face who was walking beside him.. they both turned back at me with huge smiles on their faces and Robert says, C’mon Baby I Got Your Shoes…

The Music scene in Charlotte…

Unfortunately, there isn’t a music scene in our town. We live in a small town outside of Charlotte, NC called Lancaster and there is not much at all going on in this town. The Charlotte music scene is ever growing and we are so excited to be apart of it. We are thinking about moving closer to all the action. We enjoy going to the local jams and open mics. Other than music, Robert and I enjoy thrifting and antique shopping. It’s so cool to find a partner that shares so many similar interests.

Getting to know our fans..

I’m so grateful that we live in this time. Social media allows us to connect to our fans and potential fans in such a way that’s never been done before. You get an inside look into the lives of everybody. I use SM on a daily basis. All artists should be taking advantage of all the FREE outlets out there. Besides how Facebook seems to be trying to make it harder for musicians or most business pages, I haven’t had any complaints about it. In fact, I think it’s one of the reasons we are at the level of success we are at this point in time.

Mainstream music is…

I think we have the ability to limit ourselves or catapult ourselves. I’m not willing to change my music to make a profit for a record label anyways…so who says going mainstream is the thing to do?? For me, it’s all about being able to live a simple happy life making music with my best friend. We are building a solid fan base on our own, letting the music and our live shows speak for themselves and at the end of the day…I may have had to work harder to get someone to hear my music but it’s way more gratifying.

My musical influences…

Most of my favorite artists are blues musicians. This is raw, emotional, music straight from our roots. It’s defined most of the music you hear today. Fortunately for me, I got my start in the blues scene and it’s like one big family. Everyone is so supportive of each other especially the women.
I’ve actually been taking guitar lessons from one of my heroes for the past year and have been able to share the stage with her as well… the fabulous Debbie Davies, who’s toured and recorded with the late Albert Collins. There have been so many instances where I’ve been able to share the stage with some of the worlds greatest musicians on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise. I’ve been on it 9 times. Los Lobos, Tommy Castro, Trampled Under Foot, Tab Benoit…just to name a few. I also got to meet my heroes, Etta James and Koko Taylor before they passed. I feel so blessed.

I want to leave behind…

The most amazing musical love story that people will be talking about and comparing their love to til the end of time. People have called us the next Johnny and June and it makes the hair stand up on end thinking about the history in that and what that means. The first love song I wrote for Robert is called “My Johnny” and was unintentionally written on the man in blacks birthday. Inspiring people with love….what more could we ask for?

lol It’s all a balancing act. I just want to have fun, but yeah, I got to figure out how to pay my bills in the process. I try my best not to get hung up on the money but let’s face it, we all have to have it.. it takes money to make money. Money comes and goes..and I can’t allow something so fleeting to have some kind of power over my art. My greater purpose is to love and as long as I keep that in the forefront I believe it will all work itself out and I need not worry about things I have no control over. That’s the best way for me to stay positive. I’m the only one that can allow negativity to come between me and what I”m here to do. On the topic of trends: Trends are just that…they come and go so no, I’m not worried about being trendy. Our music is the way it is because that’s how we were feeling at the time it was created not because we’re trying to keep up with some trend. That’s not real music..that’s commercial.

I’m definitely not religious. I’ve had plenty of other people’s experience with religion and they can have it! My experiences here shape my beliefs and they are always changing. I try not to be so rigid with them because who really knows!! Heaven and Hell, in my experience is a state of mind. I’ve already been to hell and I’m really enjoying heaven right now. Having a positive outlook changes everything. I believe that we all are put here for a greater purpose and it is our jobs to figure out what that is and carry it out to the best of our ability. When that focus comes into play, it’s hard to allow anything to stand in your way. What you focus on, you bring it to you…so don’t focus on the failures…focus on the successes, even if they’re small. Most of us fail our way to success anyways. A master has failed more times than you can even imagine.

I am thankful for …

everything. If I’ve learned anything, it’s to be grateful. Having an attitude of gratitude will take you so many wonderful places.

In 5 years…

I’m just along for the ride. The future is limitless and I don’t want to diminish that by having a rigid plan. If’ I would have stuck to my plan years ago I would still be sitting behind a desk selling cars so as long as I’m happy it doesn’t matter much to me.

I’ve recently learned that the word “want” means lack. So I want nothing….:) I’ve had the same affirmation I’ve said to myself for the last 11 years and that is this. “I am happy, healthy, whole and complete exactly as I am in this very moment.” Every day since I started this practice my life has continually gotten better and happier so I’m just gonna keep doing that because I know it works… nothing else has.

The Bigger Picture…

Since meeting my soul-mate, Robert Johnson, it’s been easier to see the bigger picture. It all started making sense, especially when we started blending the music more and making our love story the center focus. Even still, what we are able to see in this beautiful tapestry is still probably just a corner of the whole picture. I”m ok with not knowing how it’s all gonna turn out. What fun would that be anyways?? I like surprises, twists and turns. More will always be revealed in time. Nobody likes a spoiler, do they??

What ifs…

Try stuff!! Do it all. Take a chance, take a risk. Don’t be on your death bed wondering, what if? If what I’ve learned about happiness is true..it’s an inside job anyways so if you’re looking for something outside of yourself to make you happy then you will never truly be happy. So try stuff for the sake of trying stuff not to produce some manufactured form of happiness. It never lasts. Get real with yourself about those things and you can never be tricked by that kind of fake happy again.

My path of self discovery…

I’ve been on this self discovery path for quite some time and I’m not so easily duped anymore by the notion that money makes one rich. My life is a rich as it can be in this moment. Being rich to me, is wanting and appreciating everything you already have. The only way I could see my life richer is to see more people adopt this way of thinking and see it spread.

Good question. Life is full of conflict, contrast, black, white, right or wrong. Being able to show grace in times of conflict is a beautiful thing. I’m not 100% there yet. I like the idea that when something in my life has conflict it just means it’s time for me to learn something. Robert and I call them clarifying moments and we’ve had plenty of them!! We both come from managing, being the front person and songwriters for our previous bands so when we started trying to blend our music it wasn’t so easy.. We butted heads on a lot of things but we never gave up…even though we wanted to. It’s been such a lovely ride. We’ve learned so much about compromise and it’s carried over into our relationship. Now that we have learned each others processes we allow each other to create in our own way and we’ve managed to make some amazing music in the process.

We are both on the right path, sharing this journey together, growing, learning and making sure that love and the love of the music is the main focus. I feel like this formula will keep us headed towards living up to our fullest potential…whatever that turns out to be. It’s limitless.

My personal definition of success is…

so personal. To me, it has nothing to do with anything else but how you feel about yourself at the end of the day.. Did I do my best today? Did I show love and compassion today? Was I better than the person I was yesterday? Did I do whatever it was I wanted to do today and not settle for the mundane? If I answered yes to all those questions.. that’s success, to me.

If heaven exists what’s the first thing you would like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

Yay!! You nailed it!!!
