Behind The Music with Carmen Toth on Signs Of Life

The 80s is an era of music that I love, so you will hear that often in my material. I invested in good production for my songs because I think they deserve to be heard as intended and I truly want a career as a singer-songwriter.

Artist: Carmen Toth

Song name: Signs Of Life

Music Genre: Alternative Pop

My music is alternative pop music that reaches your soul. The Safety Net EP is my heart and soul in the form of 6 songs. This song, “Signs of Life” is about not giving up on what you always wanted. Listening to what your soul wants instead of slowly letting your soul be sucked away, year after year, in the wrong life. The song is basically me saying: “I’m taking a real shot at this because someone believed in me.”

As I also love to dance, it was important to me that I create meaningful music that you can dance to. The 80’s is an era of music that I love, so you will hear that often in my material. I invested in good production for my songs because I think they deserve to be heard as intended and I truly want a career as a singer-songwriter.

Making the Music…
Since I was 14, I have kept a journal and I fill one in about every 6 months so many of my song themes and lyrics come out of that. I also tend to create songs while just practicing my guitar or keyboard, starting with a hook and singing to it and seeing what comes out. When I’m writing, I use a ditto looper pedal so some songs are actually built out of loops I create.

I quite like the Voice Record iPhone app as I have captured many rough demos that way and can send them to people like band members and producers. For the “Safety Net” EP, I did a proper pre-production sessions with my producers where we figured out arrangements before going into the studio. Recently, I have started to get more into co-writing and my next album will probably feature at least one co-write.

How do you stay focused and balance creating with life..
I eat well and try to stay active. I like to swim, doing yoga, taking dance classes and occasionally running. Health is a priority to me. If you don’t take of your body, you’ll never have the stamina to pursue a career in this industry.

“If you are gracious, you have won the game.” – Stevie Nicks

I live in…
Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The music scene here is can be a little over saturated, as a lot of artists live here. There is a better reception and a better pay check for playing if you venture just outside of Toronto, but still in the Toronto area, like Richmond Hill or Mississauga. But I go to a lot of live shows in Toronto myself — mostly my friends in the business — and a lot of them are really talented.
