“I’ve always looked at the bigger picture. Where do I fit in? Music? Self discovery is a daily process. I have discovered things that I like about myself. I have also discovered things I hate about myself. I have a feeling that I still have a lot more to learn. ” – Paul Sheridan –  Manchester, UK

JACQUELINE JAX – How did you get your start in music?

PAUL SHERIDAN – Years ago a friend showed me a poem she had written called WHY?. I liked it and said that I’d try to put a tune to it. I’d never tried anything like this before but found out that the tune came to me quite quickly. I’ve always liked to sing and soon started to write lyrics and tunes. Then I got my first band together.

– Tell Me about your song “First Class Ticket”
I read a story in a newspaper about a couple who won the Lottery. They won millions of pounds. After a short while the money made their lives miserable and they said that they wished they had never won it. I wrote a song called First Class Ticket based on this.

– What’s the music scene like in your town?

The music scene in Manchester is great. The northern quarter of the city has many pubs and cafes that put on live music and open mike nights. Many bands have come together after the members first met here. I love doing the voices of cartoon animals but not when I’m onstage!

– What do you like about social media? Have you found any challenges that you’ve had to overcome?

I love how social media brings people from all over the world together. On the reverbnation music site I’ve noticed that a few bands have formed by meeting on social media sites.

– Why do you think it’s so hard for indie artists to break into the mainstream big markets and gain a solid fan base?

I think that the mainstream is almost a closed shop to many artists nowadays because the big record companies are set in their ways and want to maintain the status quo in the industry.

– Who is your favorite artist? Why do they influence you? Do you have any first hand experience with this artists such as a meeting, concert or special event you can tell me about?

My favorite artist is Joe Jackson. The way he composes has been a big influence on my own songwriting.

Every true artist has a creative journey they hope for,  how do you want to be remembered for your music?

If a few people relate to my work then my songs are a success. I want to be remembered for writing songs about many different things and not just generic love songs.

– Artists who seek to make their art a career often face challenges that question their sense of purpose and creativity.. What is your experience with negative energy?

My own negative energy is lack of confidence in my own abilities as a songwriter. I have to fight my way past this!

–  Are you religious? Do you believe in fate?

My belief is in a power greater than we can ever imagine that created all we know. If you want something to happen then you must make it happen!

– What are you thankful for?

I am thankful for friends and family and life. I’m thankful that I found my music.

– What do you want most and how do you know it will make you happy?

To reach more people through my music. If people are helped in anyway by my music then I’m happy.

– Have you ever stepped back to look at the bigger picture of who you are and where you fit in this world?

I’ve always looked at the bigger picture. Where do I fit in? Music? Self discovery is a daily process. I have discovered things that I like about myself. I have also discovered things I hate about myself. I have a feeling that I still have a lot more to learn.

– In your opinion what is the best way for someone to discover what they are good at and or what will make them happy?

Try many different things in life. You will find what you are good at and what makes you happy.

– How can your life become more rich? Express one idea you have that would make your life richer today.

If you help someone without any need for thanks your life is rich.

– How do you handle conflict in your life? Think of a conflicting occurrence and describe how you coped or resolved it or how you couldn’t.

I am not good at handling conflict. I tend to want to walk away from it.

– Do you feel that there is anything that prevents you from living up to your full potential?

Lack of confidence in my own abilities prevents me from reaching my full potential.

– What is your personal definition of success?

Success to me is each new song I write.

– Do you feel that you have limits to what you can do and achieve?

I do not know my limits. I have to keep going forward to find the answer.

What’s your favorite curse word?

Curse word? Shit!

If heaven exists what’s the first thing you would like to hear god say when you arrive at the pearly gates?

Well done Paul!
