Episode #541: A.V.A Live Radio Behind The Music with Jacqueline Jax
Interview by Jacqueline Jax
host of A.V.A Live Radio
Band Name: Kay Soul
Song name: As I Am
Music Genre: R&B/Soul
This song is about…
As I Am speaks to the voice inside of all of us that tells us we are not good enough. It screams self love and acceptance while taking a firm stance against the naysayers. I wrote “As I Am” because I’ve been bullied, I’ve been rejected, and I know how it feels to have people make you feel bad for being who you are.

My music is…
a reflection of my life story and experiences whether personal or through observation. Since I can be quite introverted when it comes to my personal space, my music serves as an outlet for me to comment on the human experience and inspire others. With strong themes of self love, acceptance, reflection and growth, my music is about triumph over pain.
How do you think this release represents your current direction..
My current Album just released, “Hiding In Plain Sight”, finds me in a more self-assured space. I am increasingly aware of myself and the stories I want to tell. As a result, my music has become more solid in form, content, and deliver. I’m proving to myself that I am not afraid to have a voice, to let that voice be heard, and to blaze my own trail.
Where do you create your music?
I have a small setup in my basement with my keyboard, computer, and mic stand. I will use garage band to work out ideas or record demo vocals. I then go into the studio and work with my producer to build a track and if I haven’t completed the lyrics, I will start to build the song around a story concept. While recording my album I worked with Tony Treble of A Track Studios, Chris Steinmetz of Stonecutter Recording, and BJ of Knobs Production. These producers each add a great quality to my artistry and motivate me to keep learning, growing, and perfecting my craft.
How do you stay focused and balance creating with life..
It is very difficult to pursue a music career as an Indie Artist. I’ve done more networking than socializing and I’ve had to sacrifice in order to invest in my career. While recording my album, I spent lots of weekends in the studio, late evenings writing songs and rehearsing and playing gigs on the weekend to perfect my performance skills.
What piece of music advice forever changed your way of thinking?
A great song consists of 5 main incrediants, melody, pitch, rhythm, character, and attitude. As told to me by Chris Steinmetz during one of his many coachable moments at our recording sessions. Working with him helped to grow my artistry and made a tremendous difference in the sound and quality of my music.
I live in…
I live in Chicago. The music scene here is vast, eclectic, and oh so talented! On any given night you can find live music being played. From well known artists to underground wonders waiting to be discovered, Chicago’s music scene has it all.
