While punk is sometimes needed, reggae is the best, pop and folk or jazz and blues anything goes depending on the mood. I’ve got plenty of material and new stuff keeps on coming up. I’m also into combining performing and visual arts more in live shows and in the music videos.

Interview by Jacqueline Jax
host of A.V.A Live Radio
Band Name: Mama Radical
Person Interviewing: Henna Hartikainen
Song name: In the mood
This song is about Love and recovering from broken heart. It’s about hope of still being able to give and get some affection needed in life despite of all the disappointments and hurt. One should find the freedom and happiness within oneself first. That it is the most important thing. To respect yourself and to never lose hope in life.
My music is…
very diverse. I want to experiment and explore music with different styles and sounds. While punk is sometimes needed, reggae is the best, pop and folk or jazz and blues anything goes depending on the mood. I’ve got plenty of material and new stuff keeps on coming up. I’m also into combining performing and visual arts more in live shows and in the music videos.
This release represents a particular…
mood and atmosphere. That’s very important in music. I make music in different styles but am always trying to focus my energy on creating an engaging experience.
Where do you create your music..
I make music where ever and when ever there’s inspiration and chances. For the moment we have a rehearsing studio where we practise with a bass player and a drummer.
I’ve made all of my songs by myself but many musicians has accompanied me to give their creative input and make those songs a bit different each time depending of the combo. It is so wonderful to play together with others and to find different approaches to the songs.
I haven’t had the chance to have a more solid group to progress much longer times together yet and it has been very hard sometimes because of this fact. These struggles has made me make more music and to broaden my skills as well. They have made me stronger and has deepen my understanding of how important it is to believe in your self even if no one else would and to keep on going forwards with a positive attitude.
How do you stay focused and balance creating with life..
Nature is very important to me and in a summer time I enjoy being at the summer cottage. It is a very creative place. I am looking after my 8- years old daughter who’s in the center of my life and we have a 16- years old dog. I adore them and they are great companions and inspiration. I’ve been a buddhist about seven years now and this practise of Nichiren Daishonin buddhism is very essential in keeping my self focused and balanced.
What piece of music advice forever changed your way of thinking?
I think the advice to quit and to forget about it. As an artist you get a lot of advisers, critics and opinions. It’s not always easy to know which of these advisers are really useful to you and not the other way around. I think that as an artist, I’m on the right track when I have a clear sense and intuition about my own ideas and goals that other people then can help to realise and help to make happen. Taking the full responsibility but not blaming everything on myself when doing my best. Like the great soccer player Zlatan says: listen and not listen.
I live in…
Kuopio. It is in Finland. This is the promised land of heavy metal and most of the musicians comes from that genre especially here in Kuopio. After studying in SNDO in Amsterdam for 4-years to become a dancer and choreographer and after living more than ten years in Helsinki, Kuopio feels very tiny with the cultural scene. I was making music before but Mama Radical got born here. Now it has come the time to move back to Helsinki where’s a lot more opportunities and musicians available to create with. I’m dreaming on living abroad some place warm sometime in the future.
